IELTS Speaking Part 2 is the section where you get a card with a topic, one minute to prepare, and two minutes to speak. For many test takers, this is the most stressful part of the exam.

I have seen it happen to almost every student at least once. The good news is that with the right preparation, you can walk into Part 2 confident and ready for any topic.

How Part 2 Works

You get a card that says something like: "Describe a time you helped someone." Underneath there are bullet points: who you helped, how you helped them, why you helped them, and explain how you felt about it. You have one minute to make notes. Then you speak for one to two minutes.

Category 1: People

Describe a family member you admire. Describe a teacher who influenced you. Describe a friend you have known for a long time. Describe a famous person you would like to meet.

For people topics, structure your answer around: who they are, how you know them, what they are like, and why they matter to you. The why is the most important part because it lets you show deeper vocabulary and emotion.

Category 2: Places

Describe a city you have visited. Describe your favorite room in your home. Describe a place where you feel relaxed. Describe a beautiful natural place you have seen.

For places, use all five senses. What do you see, hear, smell, feel, and taste there? Sensory details make your description vivid and natural.

Category 3: Experiences and Events

Describe a memorable event in your life. Describe a time you learned something new. Describe a celebration you enjoyed. Describe a difficult decision you made. Describe a time you helped someone.

These are the most common topics. Use a storytelling structure: what happened before, during, and after. Include how you felt at each stage.

Category 4: Objects and Things

Describe something you own that is important to you. Describe a gift you received. Describe a piece of technology you find useful. Describe a book or movie that had an impact on you.

For objects, do not just describe the thing. Describe what it means to you and why it matters.

Category 5: Hobbies and Activities

Describe a hobby you enjoy. Describe a sport you would like to try. Describe something you do to stay healthy. Describe a skill you learned recently.

Go beyond simple descriptions. Instead of saying "I like reading," say what you read, why you started, how it makes you feel, and what you learned from it.

Category 6: Hypothetical and Abstract

Describe a job you would like to have in the future. Describe a change you would like to make to your city. Describe a law you would introduce if you could.

These are harder because you cannot describe something real. Use conditional structures: "If I had the chance, I would..."

How to Use the One Minute Preparation

Most learners waste this minute. They try to write full sentences. That is a mistake.

Instead, write 4-5 keywords, one for each bullet point. Then spend the remaining time thinking about how you will connect them.

How to Practice Part 2 Effectively

You need three things: topics to practice, a timer, and feedback.

Pick a topic card. Give yourself exactly one minute to prepare. Then speak for two minutes without stopping. Record yourself. Listen back and note your mistakes. Then do it again with corrections.

An AI coach like SpeakEn makes this easier. You pick a topic, speak for two minutes, and get instant corrections on your grammar, vocabulary, and fluency. You also get an estimated IELTS band score.

Practice 2-3 Part 2 topics every day for two weeks before your test. You will notice a huge difference.
