Phrasal verbs are combinations of a verb and a preposition. Native speakers use them constantly. The problem is, they often do not make sense if you translate them literally. "Give up" does not mean "give" plus "up." It means "stop trying."

Learning phrasal verbs is essential for understanding real spoken English. Here are 20 of the most common ones.

1. Give up

To stop trying. "I will never give up learning English."

2. Look for

To search. "I am looking for a good English practice app."

3. Figure out

To understand or solve. "I cannot figure out this grammar rule."

4. Come up with

How to Learn Phrasal Verbs

Do not try to memorize all 20 at once. Focus on 3-4 per week. Use them in your conversations. The best way to learn them is to use them. Practice with an AI coach and try to use new phrasal verbs in each session. The coach will correct you if you use them wrong and encourage you when you get them right.

Phrasal verbs are what make your English sound natural. Learn them, use them, own them.

Phrasal Verbs vs Formal Verbs

One reason phrasal verbs are so common in spoken English is that they sound more natural than their formal equivalents. For example, "give up" sounds more natural than "surrender." "Figure out" sounds more natural than "ascertain." If you use too many formal words in conversation, you will sound stiff. Phrasal verbs make you sound like a real person.

That does not mean formal verbs are bad. In academic writing or formal presentations, use the formal version. But in everyday conversation, phrasal verbs are the way to go.
